According to Peter Farrelly's ‘600 Years of Theatre’ in Kilkenny’ the Duke of Ormonde brought the first Strollers theatre company to Kilkenny in 1608.
Today, venues such as Barnstorm Theatre, Cleere’s, The Set, The Hole in the Wall and The Watergate provide year round entertainment. All genres - dance, opera, comedy, drama and music are readily available to a discerning public. Myriad touring companies add further lustre to this eclectic mix.
The seven professional companies based in Kilkenny as well as the amateur ones ensures that our city and county remains at the forefront of artistic endeavours.
KBK (Kilmanagh, Ballycallan, and Killaloe) Enterprise which runs the Ballykeeffe Amphitheatre was founded in 1986 by a group of local people in order to develop and promote community development.
Located in the heart of Kilkenny City, the Watergate Theatre have been keeping audiences entertained since 1993 with local, national and international productions, live music, dance, comedy and much more.
