According to Peter Farrelly's ‘600 Years of Theatre’ in Kilkenny’ the Duke of Ormonde brought the first Strollers theatre company to Kilkenny in 1608.
Today, venues such as Barnstorm Theatre, Cleere’s, The Set, The Hole in the Wall and The Watergate provide year round entertainment. All genres - dance, opera, comedy, drama and music are readily available to a discerning public. Myriad touring companies add further lustre to this eclectic mix.

Ballykeeffe is a unique venue in the tradition of Italy’s famous outdoor theatres. The Amphitheatre boasts astounding natural acoustics providing an unrivalled experience for those attending performances hosted here. Shows in 2017 include Stocktons Wing, Hermitage Green, The Riptide Movment, The Frank and Walters, Ham Sandwich and Anuna.
Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann is the largest group involved in the preservation and promotion of Irish traditional music. Their Summer Entertainment Show with Ceoltoiri Kilkenny at Kilkenny Castle each Wednesday evening from June - August
