Storytelling with Jim Maher in Kilkenny

For more than four decades Kilkenny Storyteller Jim Maher has entertained numerous visitors to Ireland’s Ancient East, from North America, Canada and from many other far flung places around the globe, with his humorous stories of a Country and lifestyle that many may not now recognise. He takes us back in time to a world of storytelling, which has been handed down over the centuries in a tradition that stretches back to the origins of theatre itself.

Since very early in his life Jim has had a fascination with all things cultural and humorous, evoking, as he does, a time when life was more leisurely, where laughter was heard and cherished at every hearth, every crossroad, pump and gatepost.

It was the best of times and the pace of life was more in harmony with nature and its people. His stories remind us of what is in all of us: a roughish sense of humour, a taste for the quirks and foibles of life as it was lived. Jim has been involved in the folk and traditional circuit both as a solo artist and supporting such names as Christy Moore, Don McClean, Moving Hearts, Planxty, Nathan Carter, Sharon Shannon, Mary Black and Stockton’s Wing.

His television appearances include Cork 800 Gala concert televised live to the nation, Good Morning America as well as appearances on The Late Late Show, Ireland’s longest running chat show, with Host Gay Byrne.

The beat of the bodhran, the glint in the eye, the narrative perfection: all of these are his, to share with us, to take us back to a place in the time before television.

Jim has performed at a range of Family and Corporate Gatherings, Theatres, Arts Centres, Public Libraries and Primary school visits.
