Dreaming of Romance this Valentines? It may be difficult in lockdown, but why not use the time to cosy up with a bottle of bubbly and a crackling fire with your loved one and plan for a future break in the Romantic Medieval City. Here is a taster of what your future romantic staycation could look like when it is safe to travel again;

Castles fit for Kings & Queens..

You certainly can’t go to Kilkenny and not visit its iconic castle, a remnant of the Norman occupation of Ireland dating back to 12th century. Take a romantic stroll through the grounds or organise a tour, explore both wings of the castle which were restored to their 19th Century splendor and don’t forget to soak up a little culture with a visit to The Kilkenny Design Centre, you might even be lucky enough to pick up some local crafts for your loved one.

The sky’s the limit..

Savor an intimate moment for two and climb the steps of St Canice’s Cathedral and Round Tower, one of the most prominent and romantic sights in the beautiful medieval city of Kilkenny. St. Canice’s Round Tower is the oldest standing structure in Kilkenny and is also one of the only two round towers in Ireland that visitors are allowed to climb. Watch the sunset over Kilkenny in the arms of your loved one while taking in the stunning views of the city and surrounding countryside.

Baskets of romance…

Sweep her off her feet with an atmospheric bike ride complete with a luxurious picnic basket provided by Kilkenny Cycling Tours. Choose to stock the basket full of delicious artisan treats from the Kilkenny Design Centre or simply request a fully stocked basket.  Take to the countryside for some peace and quiet, cycle the back roads to the picturesque village of Bennettsbridge, home to Nicholas Mosse Pottery and Moth to a Flame. Return to Kilkenny city at your own leisure along the truly beautiful River Nore, taking pit stops to enjoy the scenic views.

Take a Hike..

Log off and shut down from the hustle bustle of city life and set your sights on The Brandon Hill Loop. This 12km trail will follow minor roadways, forestry tracks and hillside patched to reach the ultimate peak! We guarantee once you arrive, you will not regret your decision to tackle the challenging and scenic trail together, especially if you catch the pink and peach sunset of Spring! Afterwards head back to the charming town of Graiguenamanagh for a bite to eat and a well-deserved glass of wine.

Taste Kilkenny’s Michelin Star magic…

Treat your lucky someone with a visit to one of two Michelin-star restaurants in Kilkenny. Enjoy an ambience set for a queen and seasonal dishes influenced by French cuisine. Visit La Campagne in the city centre or travel south to The Lady Helen Restaurant at Mount Juliet Estate, one of the most talked about dining experiences in the South East of Ireland.

Enjoy a romantic stroll in the countryside..

Look no further for an abundance of beautiful settings to enjoy some romantic strolls taking in the picturesque Kilkenny countryside. Kilkenny boasts stunning historical ruins scattered throughout the county for you to explore or parks and gardens that will leave you in awe including the famous Woodstock Gardens in Inistioge.

Chairperson of Kilkenny Tourism, Ciaran Conroy commented: “There is no doubt about it, this year Valentine’s day won’t be celebrated in the traditional way!  But people can still plan a future romantic getaway with a loved one in Kilkenny, where they can look forward to fine dining, the very best of outdoor attractions and of course, a luxury stay in one of our many romantic hotels.”
