Following a recent call out for volunteers to join the Kilkenny Welcome Team by our senior hurling manager, Brian Cody, Kilkenny County Council were delighted with the response to same. Over 20 enthusiastic individuals answered the call to join Brian’s team and put on the Kilkenny jersey and play their part in supporting Kilkenny’s economic recovery.
The Welcome Team hit the streets for the first time over the Bank Holiday weekend, decked out in highly visible branded gear. The team were operating in strategic locations in the city meeting and greeting visitors and providing a warm Kilkenny welcome along with helpful information on opening hours to attractions, ATM locations and interesting snippets about Kilkenny.
The team were greeted by Brian Cody at a training session last week which covered training in Covid-19 protocols and public safety and was followed by a walking tour of the various attractions around Kilkenny. In welcoming the team, Colette Byrne, Chief Executive of Kilkenny County Council thanked the volunteers for their support in this important initiative stating that “you will play a key role in supporting the businesses and visitor attractions in their recovery following months of closure and hopefully support a late and potentially strong season of domestic visitors”.
This is just one of many initiatives which Kilkenny County Council have been working on to support the reopening of Kilkenny. Other initiatives include the Social Distancing Scheme which is a combination of one-way streets and pedestrianisation, a Saturday Farmers Market, Art on The Mayors Walk and last weekend saw the introduction of the first of a number of Outdoor Seated Areas in the Market Yard. This will provide the restaurants and cafes in the area with further seating for their customers where indoor seating does not allow for social distancing.
Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Andrew Mc Guinness commented that “we are responding to the challenges facing our businesses and visitor attractions through the various initiatives being delivered and in particular this innovative initiative will ensure that visitors coming to Kilkenny will receive a real Kilkenny welcome, thanks to our Welcome Team.”
In order to deliver a comprehensive Welcome Team over the coming months, we are calling out for more volunteers. If you’re interested in being part of the Kilkenny Welcome Team, please contact Martina Comerford at email@example.com.
