With a particular reference to surveyed gates in the Castlecomer, Thomastown and Inistioge areas the presentation will focus on local gate design and explore their cultural and social significance.
Shem Caulfield works as an artist and heritage consultant and since 2002 has surveyed and recorded vernacular farm gates throughout many parts of Ireland since 2003. His focus over the past twenty years has been on the Irish landscape and he will present photographs, drawings, writings in an attempt to bring to light the social, economic, cultural and political narratives that the Irish landscape holds.
The vernacular wrought iron farm gate offers a cultural totem through which this rich and complex story can emerge. Shem will showcase the vast archive of material he has accumulated on his extensive travels throughout the island of Ireland.
