Free Admission to Kilkenny Castle
As part of Heritage Week 2024 Kilkenny Castle is offering free admission on Saturday the 17th and Sunday the 18th of August.
Discover the ancestral home of the Butler Family with a free self-guided visit to the magnificent Victorian period rooms of Kilkenny Castle. We will have an outdoor queue in operation. Please note that this is a very busy site and visitor may experience delays. Last admission is 5pm.
Partial wheelchair access, children must be supervised.
No advance booking required, tickets will be available from our ticket desk from 9:15am.

This early Georgian House together with its charming gardens lies at the foot of Ossory Hill, four miles north east of Kilkenny City. A date stone of 1722 greets you at the entrance. Ballysallagh has been restored and is considered an exquisite gem in its parkland setting. It a member of Historic Houses of Ireland.
Booking essential as numbers are limited to 12 persons per tour.

Heritage Talk on the Sessions House

Reimagining Magh Airgid Rois: The Plain of the Silver Birches

A Walk in the Gardens at Kilkenny Community Allotments

Castlecomer Discovery Park Heritage Walk

Guided Tours of Shankill Castle, Co. Kilkenny

Take an ‘Upstairs/Downstairs’ guided tour of the castle, led by a member of the current residents, the Cope family. Visit the ‘upstairs’ rooms: the public rooms where the Aylwards (the family who built the house) entertained, such as the dining room, ante room and drawing room. Then take a look behind-the-scenes at the ‘downstairs’: the servants’ stairs and the basement.
These rooms provide insight into how the house would have been run in the past. Hear tales and anecdotes from the history of the house, and see how the house is lived in today. Also view the paintings of Elizabeth Cope, which are on display throughout the house.
Shankill Castle is a member of Historic Houses of Ireland.

Steam Train

The Railway Preservation Society will visit Kilkenny on Sunday 18th August with Steam Loco no. 131 built in 1902. The carriages are Cravens built in the early 1960’s which were withdrawn in 2006 and restored by the RPSI.
We are bringing 300 passengers to Kilkenny to experience the events taking place in the city. We will have on board the Star of Knockage Accordian Band from Carrickfergus who will march to Kilkenny Castle and hold a concert between 2.30 and 3.30. Bring your children down to enjoy the sound, smell and sight of a working steam locomotive.

Behind the Scenes: Creating access to the Butler Gallery Collection

Drama Workshop on Physical Acting & Performance with the award-winning actor, Aaron Monaghan

To celebrate the inscription of the Amateur Dramatic Tradition on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage and to mark its formal recognition by the State, a drama workshop will be led by Aaron Monaghan. An award winning actor, Aaron will deliver a three-hour workshop on physical acting, taking participants through all elements of performance in terms of traditional Irish dramatic texts; from initial research, first readings, rehearsal process and performance. The workshop will explore the physical and vocal elements of performance, incorporating movement and voice elements, as well as script analysis and character studies.

The Rower Graveyard Co. Kilkenny

Connections between Geology, Stone carving, Memorial Design and the First Cryptogamic Life that begins the Cycle again
This graveyard features a ruin of a Board of First Fruits Church, constructed between 1790 and 1810, and documented as being still in use in 1903. This beautiful, quiet place overlooks the graceful slopes of the Leinster Range from Mount Leinster to White Mountain, and the Barrow valley below. Birds sway above the visitor on a Summer’s evening.
We will make connections between the past and present, the living and the dead, the inert minerals of rock and the wide associated biodiversity of lichens, mosses, liverworts, algae and ferns as well a as the broad range of countries from which the gravestones have been brought to this restful spot.
Join Maria Cullen, of the Irish Geological Association, as we explore the riches of this elegant and historic graveyard that dates back to, at least, the 17th Century.

Join artists Michelle McMahon and Monica Fleming in celebrating our hay meadows and traditional crafts with an adult crafting workshop.
Traditional crafts using hay and straw, along with many of our meadows, are in danger of being lost. This event will explore the art of making hay and straw costumes decorated with natural materials, using weaving techniques and the Súgán twister. Participants can take away what they make.
Monica will also speak about our disappearing meadows, which are a valuable habitat for wildflowers and an important food source for our pollinators.
Hay! is part of Workhouse EXCHANGE, a programme of creative workshops, artist residencies, and community skills exchanges to revitalise the Callan Workhouse site.
Workhouse EXCHANGE is funded through The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Creative Ireland Kilkenny.

Crash of a B-17 Flying Fortress in Johnstown during WWll

On the morning of the 23rd January, 1944, an American B-17 Flying Fortress took off from Goose Bay airfield in Newfoundland en route to RAF Prestwick in the UK to be made battle ready. Later that day it would crash in Johnstown Co. Kilkenny. This presentation will explore the reasons why the aircraft was in the area and the events that unfolded after the crash.

This early Georgian House together with its charming gardens lies at the foot of Ossory Hill, four miles north east of Kilkenny City. A date stone of 1722 greets you at the entrance. Celebrate Water Heritage Day on the River Dinan with Nore Vision Citizen Scientists Pat Boyd and Mary Brennan. Will we learn about the living networks and ecology of rivers and how macro invertebrates can be used as biological indicators to monitor water quality . We will learn about the technique for kick sampling and also to identify macro invertebrates.

Pádraig Ó Macháin – “200 years Tomorrow: The Hangings in Galmoy”

Following the ambush and killing of local landowner, John Marum, on 16th March 1824, six local men were convicted of the killing and sentenced to death by hanging. The men were brought from Kilkenny Gaol on 26th August 1824 to Knockshinraw and were hanged there, close to where John Marum was killed. Five of the men protested their innocence to the end.
As this is an outdoor event, in a field, suitable clothing and footwear is advised

Heritage Walk Kildalton College to Fiddown Bridge

1. A short walk to an ancient ‘Moated Site’ on Brandon Hill with a demonstration by an OPW stone mason of the ‘plug & feather’ technique of boulder splitting that took place at the site in past times. (about 90 minutes).
2. A further (optional) hillwalk (about 3 hours) to visit Brandon Hill summit and other archaeological/historical field monuments.
