Kilkenny Roots Festival - a national institution and an international buzz-phrase among the Americana / Roots movement
Since 1998 this festival has attracted some of the finest names in the Americana/Roots canon. Wind your way through Kilkenny’s medieval streets sampling the huge mixture of old and new acts on the free pub gig trail, with all styles catered for, from swing to bluegrass, rockabilly to cajun, folk, blues and beyond.
Smithwick’s Kilkenny Roots Festival celebrates its twenty second year with an exciting line-up including Grammy winner Patty Griffin, legendary Mexican-American rock musician, songwriter and singer Alejandro Escovedo, Canadian roots rockers The Sadies, retro country soul band The Delines and bluesy guitarist/vocalist Joey Landreth. Also confirmed for 2019 are Michael McDermott – described by author Stephen King as “one of the best songwriters in the world,” Virginia native Dori Freeman and River Whyless. Latest additions to the 2019 line-up include The Accidentals, Susto, Robbie Fulks, Malojian and William The Conqueror.
In addition to the ticketed shows, there will be over 70 gigs on the free Smithwick’s Music Trail throughout Kilkenny city. Tickets are available online and from Rollercoaster Records, Kilkenny, Tel 0567763669.
The festival runs from 3rd to 6th May 2019.
