Over 700 years ago, Dame Alice Kyteler was brought before the Bishop of Ossory Richard Ledrede accused of heresy and witchcraft after four of her husbands died in seemingly suspicious circumstances. Alice is believed to have fled Kilkenny before her trial so on the day, Petronella de Meath – Alice’s handmaiden – was forced to stand trial in her place. On the 3rd November 1324, Petronella was burned at the stake on the High Street in Kilkenny city in what is thought to have been one of the first witch trials in Europe.
In 2024, Kilkenny commemorated Petronella’s memory through a number of events that explored the spells cast on society during the witch trials. Since then, it has grown into an annual programme of events under Kilkenny’s Toil & Trouble Festival. At its heart, the festival is a celebration of the strength of women through captivating performances, informative talks and interactive creative workshops.
