Few animals capture people’s imagination quite like the wolf. For thousands of years, the wolf has fascinated us, frightened us, and drawn us in. Perhaps it’s because there’s a part of us that identifies with that wild, untamed spirit we see in the wolf. The wolf features prominently in myths and legends, but from 1st October Kilkenny is embracing the very essence of the Wolf with a month long series of events and exhibitions dedicated to the creatures, entitled ‘WolfWalkers Month’. WolfWalkers is an animated feature created by Kilkenny based four-time Academy Award nominated animators ‘Cartoon Saloon’. The feature received rave reviews when it premiered this month at the Toronto International Film Festival and such is the response, it is now ‘tipped’ as an Academy Award winner. To celebrate its upcoming launch, Kilkenny Animated in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland and Kilkenny County Council have organised ‘WolfWalkers Month’ - a series of outdoor and indoor exhibitions and events throughout October:

Working with local young people’s groups, Kilkenny Animated will facilitate a project to create works of street art in Kilkenny city that celebrate the film and the art of animation. Kilkenny County Council will also work with partners to create visually vibrant installations in vacant shop windows and sites throughout the city.
Kilkenny Animated has commissioned Algorithm to produce a spectacular projection mapped illuminations, with an animated loop of scenes and characters from the film, playing on the expanse of the external river walls of Kilkenny Castle. These illuminations will run for a number of hours every evening in the month of October. This spectacle can be viewed from John’s Bridge, Canal Walk and from the terrace of the River Court Hotel. Because the presentation loop will be about 10 minutes’ duration and will run repeatedly, no mass gathering of people will happen.

“In a time of superstition and magic, when wolves are seen as demonic and nature an evil to be tamed, a young apprentice hunter, Robyn, comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack. But when Robyn saves a wild native girl, Mebh, their friendship leads her to discover the world of the Wolfwalkers and transforms her into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.”
Butler Gallery continues its successful partnership with Cartoon Saloon in presenting an exhibition in response to Wolfwalkers, Cartoon Saloon’s new film. The exhibition highlights the strengths and messages of this animated film whose story is based in medieval Kilkenny and includes core working drawings and backgrounds. This interactive and immersive exhibition is designed by Stephen McNamara of Roji and will coincide with the Irish premier of the film.
As with previous collaborations with Cartoon Saloon, Butler Gallery will deliver an extensive programme of public engagement including animation workshops for professionals, general public and children; film screenings; storytelling and a Medieval Ireland Talk Series connecting the film to medieval Kilkenny.
