Dine like a local

Dine like a local and discover the Insiders guide to Kilkenny. These are the unmissable faces and places of a magical destination.

CakeFace

Kilkenny’s CakeFace patisserie  sits perched on Ireland’s Medieval Mile in the shadow of St. Canice’s Cathedral and is a firm favourite for locals and visitors for its great coffee, gourmet sandwiches and high end patisserie selection.

Cakeface is the brainchild of enterprising pastry chef duo Laura & Rory Gannon. Returning home after years working with some of the best pastry teams in France and London including The Savoy, Café Royal Laura & Rory wanted to create their own special brand.  Cakeface was born out of the desire to create unique, quirky and unusual cakes pastries and desserts. CakeFace specialise in the unexpected and delicious, their range of desserts is guaranteed to wow and surprise. With names like rhubarb rose and the tarty apple, flavours are devised in a state of the art lab -there is nothing pedestrian about this hidden gem.

The best in Kilkenny they claim, and they could be right. Small but mighty, Cakeface is a little treasure.

Truffles

Nestled in the heart of Kilkenny city,  this exciting new restaurant prepares delightful European cuisine using the finest local ingredients, which is prepared using modern French cooking techniques with an Italian hint. A wonderful combination! They also provide an extended menu for our Vegan and Vegetarian guests. Despite being one of Kilkenny’s newest eateries, Truffles has already established itself as one of the city’s most popular among locals and tourists alike.

With owner-manager Milko Mihaylov and Chef Lukasz Glab at the helm, this elegant fine-dining restaurant and wine bar is “Rooted in the Freshness of the Season”.

Staying true to this motto, Truffles lists their local suppliers and partners that speak volumes for the restaurant’s down to earth philosophy and all menus are designed to satisfy diners that may have allergies. Impressively, over 95% of dishes are also available as gluten, nut, dairy and shellfish free alternatives.

According to Milko Mihaylov: “All of our fresh Irish poultry, pork, game, lamb and beef are supplied by second generation craft butcher Pat Mullins of Mullins Butchers in Kilkenny City, while duckling is supplied by Silver Hill Foods in Co. Monaghan. Kish Fish in Dublin supply all fresh seafood including scallops, prawns and Irish crab meat.”

"An intimate restaurant serving imaginative dishes and catering especially well for vegans and vegetarian"

Paris Texas

Paris Texas is located on the main shopping street in the heart of Kilkenny City. Newly refurbished the pub has transformed into one of the leading Gastro pubs in the South East and is home to an in-house wood smoking oven offering a fusion of traditional American South West favourites with the sophistication of New Orleans French Quarter.

Paris Texas delivers restaurant quality food at affordable prices ensuring its popularity with local and visitors alike. Regular offers and specials are available mid week with ladies night on Friday not to be missed. Inside this wonderfully adorned pub the bar extends right back from the High St with a large seated area for dining leading on to a bespoke designed covered smoking area and then on to a Gin Bar where Friday Nights come into their own.

Lady Helen Restaurant

Lady Helen McCalmont, the previous owner of Mount Juliet, was a superb hostess, who oversaw the gardens and kitchens with a kindly but firm hand. She would have been delighted to know her standards were maintained  and that the restaurant bearing her name also bears a Michelin Star, along with three AA Rosettes.

The internationally-themed menu consists of dishes made using local ingredients, including many from our own kitchen garden, herb garden and farm. The atmosphere of opulence within the Lady Helen Restaurant complements the pastoral views out over the pastures to the River Nore, racing its way south to Inistioge.

Mount Juliet has long been seen as one of the shining beacons of the Irish food scene, Ken Harker and the team have retained their Michelin star . They continue to strive to create innovative and consistently good plates of food but most importantly the quality of the food mirrors everything that Lady Helen embodies pure class. As Coco Chanel once said “a lady should be two things : classy and fabulous”, at the Lady Helen you’ll find both.
