SPRING

As the plants come into bloom during the spring, so does Kilkenny. Our beautiful gardens and park spaces burst into life and the open farms are abuzz with the energetic new arrivals that the season brings. Heritage sites begin to reopen to tell the fascinating tales from hundreds of years ago that live between the stone walls. Popular attractions throw open their doors to welcome visitors for unforgettable experiences, while the theatre programmes are packed with live drama, music and comedy performances to wow crowds.

And St. Patrick’s Day is not just a day of celebrations on the 17th March – in Kilkenny, it is a multi-day affair! Kilkenny Tradfest gets toes tapping to traditional Irish music in pubs across the city in the days leading up to the bank holiday, while the St. Patrick’s Festival Kilkenny programme runs concurrently taking Irish culture to the cobbled streets. As well as the all-important parade, the festivities include carnival rides, a pop-up Gaeltacht and a band stand with talented local musicians to keep the party going!

SUMMER

Then we move to summer in Kilkenny when the evenings become brighter and we kick things up a notch with how much there is to see and do! Take part in a wealth of outdoor activities including walking tours, kayaking excursions, boat trips, falconry experiences, outdoor laser tag, karting…the list goes on and on! Try your hand at one of Ireland’s national sports on a hurling tour, or take to the green at one of Kilkenny’s many excellent golf courses.

One thing that encapsulates Kilkenny during the summer months is the unmistakable buzz, so experience the atmosphere for yourself at one of Kilkenny’s many incredible festivals. The Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival brings the funny to the city over the June bank holiday weekend with a mix of homegrown talent and hilarious international comics. Then during the month of August, the Kilkenny Arts Festival drapes the county in arts and cultural events across 2 weeks with the Alternative Kilkenny Arts Festival creating a bumper programme of fringe events.

Savour Kilkenny

AUTUMN

Although the leaves change and the evenings grow shorter, the buzz continues in Kilkenny throughout autumn. The harvest season brings an abundance of mouthwatering food and drink from Kilkenny’s fields and orchards to the tables of our cafés and restaurants. Immerse yourself in the food scene through a food tour, meet the producers or brush up on your cooking skills at one of our cookery schools.

One of the biggest Irish foodie events of the year takes place right here: Savour Kilkenny. The food festival takes place over the October bank holiday weekend and marks the harvest with a 100-stall strong food market, free cookery demos from Ireland’s top chefs and exclusive dining events. And not forgetting, Kilkenny is known for its tales of witch trials and haunting medieval stories, so there is nowhere better to step into the spooky atmosphere for Halloween. As one of Ireland’s Home of Halloween destinations, you can expect a month-long programme of events including pumpkin picking, storytelling, fire performances and so much more to celebrate Samhain.
