Red Book of Ossory

St Canice's Cathedral & Round Tower The Close, Kilkenny, Kilkenny, Ireland

Discover the remarkable Red Book of Ossory. Created almost 700 years ago, it is on public display here for the first time. From medieval distillation to a bishop’s poetry, its pages reach into the past and show us, through scribed words, aspects of Kilkenny life previously obscured by centuries

The book was penned in Kilkenny almost 700 years ago by a most extraordinary bishop, the Bishop of Ossory, Richard Ledrede. On loan from the Representative Church Body Library, the book is returning ‘home’ to go on public display for the first time in history.

Alternative Kilkenny Arts Festival

The Alternative Kilkenny Arts (AKA) festival is a local, community-led arts festival that takes place every August. It runs from August 7–17, 2025 and features the work of over 200 artists from a wide range of creative areas — including visual arts, music, performance, writing, and more.

AKA is all about community and creativity. It gives artists a chance to share their work in an open, welcoming way, and invites the public to enjoy and take part in the arts. The festival is free to attend and open to everyone. The AKA Hub, located in the Bank at the bottom of the parade acts as both a base for the team and a lively space for exhibitions, events, and performances.

A full list of events will be available from mid-July at akafringe.com.
