Exhibition: The Visitors by Marielle MacLeman

Butler Gallery Evans Home, John's Quay,, Kilkenny, Kilkenny, Ireland

Exploring loss and preservation amid scientific research to improve native woodland, Marielle MacLeman’s solo show is a playful yet critical lament on Ireland’s built and natural heritage. Animating a scene change between the domestic and global, she veneers surfaces with diseased woodchips and fallen leaves, recreates the razed wallpapers of a ‘big house’ with invasive species, and dyes upholstery with ‘climate-ready’ ivy – ubiquitous underminer of walls and trees but essential in stabilising their rotting remains.

The moon has always inspired humanity, acting as a ‘cultural mirror’ to society, reflecting the ideas and beliefs of all people around the world. Over the centuries, the moon has been interpreted as a god and as a planet. It has been used as a timekeeper, calendar and been a source of light to aid nighttime navigation. Throughout history the moon has inspired artists, poets, scientists, writers and musicians the world over. The ethereal blue light cast by a full moon, the delicate crescent following the setting sun, or the mysterious dark side of the moon has evoked passion and exploration. Different cultures around the world have their own historical, cultural, scientific and religious relationships to the moon. And yet somehow, despite these differences, the moon connects us all.

Jacques (Bernard Campan) is in his 50s and divorced. Not only is his health failing, his wine business is on the brink of bankruptcy. He sees little joy in his future until kind, open-hearted, Hortense (Isabelle Carré) wanders into his shop looking for a bottle of wine. And so the scene is set for a textbook romantic comedy, with two characters - who are complete opposites and both harbouring past heartache - who are undeniably drawn to each other.

This is a light, enjoyable piece of French cinema, featuring plenty of comic relief from a team of supporting players with a generous helping of double entendres and free-flowing wine! Based on director Ivan Calbérac’s stage play of the same name.
